September 8th: Triangle Food Truck News

The Triangle’s (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) Food Trucks news related to business happenings, events, and other whatever food trucks, fans, and those interested want to know.

Hot off the Grill this Week

Recent news sizzling on hot asphalt and in conversations

A Stampede of Rodeos!

Earlier last week, both Knightdale and Garner mentioned organizing a rodeo.  While Durham and Raleigh have a pretty decent following, the “smaller” city rodeos are nothing to scoff at.  They have been well received and attended.  If you attended the Cary or Wake Forest ones, you know what I mean.  Knightdale is organizing one soon for September 27th and Garner has announced one for October 26th.

Knightdale’s line-up has been announced with Chick-N-Que, 101 Catering, Deli-icious, King’s Philly Cheesesteaks, Sōl Tacos, American Meltdown, Kona Ice, and Iced Cupcakes. The location is Knightdale Station, 810 N First Avenue and the event is from 11am-2pm.

Garner has announced a line-up, but asking interested parties to contact John Hodges at 919.773.4402 or email at downtown garner (at) nc (dot) rr (dot) com [broke up the email address as I didn’t want to create unnecessary emails for the Town].

Also, as previously mentioned, Wake Forest will round-up trucks again on November 9th.  The line-up has not been announced, but the location is the same spot at the Over The Falls Center on Elm and Brooks in Wake Forest.  The date has been set for November 9th.  Check out more details on their Facebook Page here.

Also, the next Downtown Raleigh rodeo is scheduled for October 12th (Columbus Day weekend).

Big Mike’s BBQ

The blog reported earlier in the summer that Big Mike’s BBQ left View Bar on Glenwood (which subsequently closed) and hinted on Twitter of a restaurant opening.  I took down the update as I hadn’t heard anything.  The buzz has came back and Big Mike’s BBQ recently dropped location details, but no opening date.  The restaurant is near High House and Maynard, across from Kroger at 1222 NW Maynard Road.  Excited to see the Piggy Mac and Redneck Nachos finding a permanent home soon.

Iced Cupcakes

Every sweet potato cupcake sold by Iced Cupcakes, a $1 will be donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Food Truck Events Ahead

SPARKcon

The Visual Arts Exchange organizes this event that promotes creates creativity.  The event has many other events throughout downtown related to food, arts, and wide variety of other creative expressions.  SPARKcon is September 11th through the 14th.  Food trucks will be throughout Downtown, but there is a rodeo going on organized by Rebus Works.

Rebus Works Rodeo: Barone Meatball, Dump Pho King, and Jam Ice Cream will be at 13 Martin Street from 5-10pm on Friday, September 12th.

Other trucks to be out and about on Saturday: Deli-icious, Chick-N-Que, Dump Pho King, KocinA

For more information on SPARKcon, see their website: http://www.sparkcon.com.

Sarge’s First Crab Feast Low Country Boil

This Saturday, Sarge’s will have a Grand Opening event which will have many delicacies around Low Country cuisine.  The restaurant is at 400 Southtown Circle, Rolesville from 3-8pm.  The cost is $27.95, but there are indications things can be bought a la carte.  For more details on the event, check out the Facebook Event Page.

Knightdale’s Community Day

This September 13th is Knightdale’s Community Day honoring the citizens and community of Knightdale.  There are a lot events going on from 11 am to 6pm. The food trucks announced are Chick-N-Que, Sol Tacos, Barone Meatball, and MaMa Duke’s.  The event is at Knightdale Station, 810 N First Avenue.

Retro Run 5K

Sometimes I come across events in the Triad, which also feature Triangle trucks. It looks like there is a evening 5K race this Saturday at 5:3opm with a mini-rodeo afterwards.  Since the event is this weekend, the race fee is $35 which gets you a T-Shirt, 2 beers, a food truck tapas coupon. There are other packages to race with more tickets or no race. If you want more details on the race, check out http://retrorun5k.com.  The food truck rodeo has its own Facebook Page, which I found KocinA, Ice Queen, and King Creole.

Leukemia / Lymphoma Society Benefit

On Sunday, September 14th, Draft Line Brewing will have an event benefiting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  See the above flyer for all the activities going on for the event. Food trucks Buns-N-The Sun, Frost Bites, Hanu and Valentino’s will be there.  The event is from 3 to 8 pm.

Upcoming Events

The Science of Beer

One of Durham’s Museum of Life and Science’s Adult Only (21+) events takes places after the museum closes to the general public.  The event will have local breweries tastings and workshops led by Gizmo Brew Works and Bull City Home Brew with Captain Poncho’s, Only Burger, and Pie Pushers on hand for food.  The event is a ticketed event and the museum warns it will sell out.  For details check out the event page.

Clayton Harvest & Music Festival

This event stretches from September 17th through September 21st with a food truck rodeo on Saturday evening (the 20th).  So far I saw D’Burritos and Belgian Waffology.

Double Barley Rodeo

Double Barley is a brewery out in Smithfield that is having a food truck rodeo and craft fair.  Food trucks, 20 artists, and live music will be there from 2-6 pm on September 20th.

Food Truck line-up announced: Deli-icious, Virgil’s, Chick-N-Que, Olio and Aceto, and Ladybug’s Treats.

Beericana

Update:  Follow them on Twitter (@Beericana) as I’ve seen tweets where tickets are being given away at breweries and events.

Daily I am catching updates for this event, which looks like the planning stages are coming into full swing.  I won’t go into full details on the beer, but I did notice beers outside of the Triangle are participating (like Old Mecklenburg in Charlotte).

Food Trucks announced: Stuft, Tailgater Toby, Not Just Icing, Jam Ice Cream, All American, KoKyu, Dump Pho King, Valentino’s, Baguettaboutit, Olio and Aceto, and CJ’s Steet Food.

Music includes Dark Water Rising, Lynda & Pattie, Skinny Bag of Sugar, and The Honeycutters as music.  The event is September 27th at Sugg Farm in Holly Springs.

Tickets Sales have also started with General Admission at $45, VIP at $75, and a Designated Driver at $15 (no beer access).

For Tickets and more details, see the event site.

Sōl Tacos Deep River Beer Dinner

This week Sōl Tacos announced that November 5th will be their Beer Dinner with Deep River Brewing in Clayton.  The menu will highlight Sōl Tacos’ Southern-influenced Latin theme with Deep River’s Fall Seasonal line-up.  Tickets and such have not been announced, but you may want to lock this one down in your social calendar.

Brewgaloo

This event has been around, but this year was my first time.  For beer (and spirits as local TOPO Distillery was here this year) and food truck fans, this is a prime event.  Two stages on both ends of Fayetteville Street with beer and food trucks filling the asphalt in between.  The date set is April 25, 2015 and is from 2-10pm.  I know a bit early, but you might want to circle it and tell your family this is a great weekend to visit.

New Whips

New Trucks!

CockADoodleMoo

Each day a new clue is revealed about this food truck.  And it seems the shroud will be unveiled next week September 20-21st, when CockADoodleMoo will be at Walkahead Farms in Youngsville for the 9th Annual Eastern Triangle Farm Tour.  The event does center around the theme hinted on CockADoodleMoo’s website of local and farm-raised.  This event has my interest.  For more details on the Farm Tour and Walkahead Farms, check out this link.

Amigosan Food Truck

This Latin-Asian fusion truck has been hitting the asphalt tires screeching.  Last week, they were a last minute surprise at Big Boss’ Run Club, spotted at Shop Local Raleigh’s Glenwood South Concert Series, and Railhawks games.  If you haven’t seen them, follow the truck @AmigosanFood and check out their schedule at Amigosanfood.com.

Bam Pow Chow

Bam Pow Chow has been hitting the streets, too and making appearances in the Northwest Raleigh.  They have been spotted at House of Hops, Lonerider, Gizmo Brewworks, and Person Street Bar.  Their website has posted a few scheduled events bampowchow.com and you can also follow the truck @BamPowChow.

Kocina Food Truck

JP Murica’s South American Tapas truck is going full throttle in September.  I heard about the truck awhile back from my friend, Triangle Localista, but I hadn’t been able to catch them.  They will be at Deep River Brewing September 7th.  They posted a few more events in September both in the Triad and the Triangle.  Follow them on Twitter @Kocinafoodtruck

New Rest Stops

Where are trucks being spotted…

New Breweries

Stopped by Nickelpoint Brewing (506 Pershing Road, Raleigh), which is tucked inside the Five Points area.  At their Grand Opening, they had Manna and Iced Cupcakes for thirsty local beer drinkers.  I suspect this won’t be the first time food trucks will be here and they do have a nice inside and outside area.

Other Rest Stops

  • House of Hops (6909 Glenwood Ave #100, Raleigh):  This spot has been very hot with activity.  Baguettaboutit. Kocina, and Bam Pow Chow were all spotted here over the last two weeks.  The craft beer shop is located near Glenwood and Millbrook/Duraleigh (behind the Walgreens), which means a nice Northwest Raleigh food truck spot.
  • Person Street Bar (805 N Person St, Raleigh): I always like it when a bar/brewery and food truck can come together.  Both can come in with their specialities and exceed on expectations on both ends.  So far, Bam Pow Chow, Dump Pho King TruckHanu, Green Olive Deli Truck, Not Just Icing, and Will and Pops parked here.
  • Beer Durham (404 Hunt Street, Durham): Again, beer and food trucks collaborating!  This neighborhood bottle shop has 20 beers on tap where you can refill growlers and now enjoy food trucks.  I spoke with Ashley at the location and they are excited to have trucks be there.  The location is in a multi-story mixed building a block away from Durham Central Park.  I’ve seen Bo’s Kitchen, Porchtta, Sol Tacos and The Wicked Biscuit here with Bam Pow Chow listed the upcoming week.
  • Marathon Gas Station, Five Points (1641 Glenwood Ave) on Fridays from 5-10pm the as close to Philly as you can get Philly Cheesesteaks food truck will be parked here.
  • If you are willing to take a chance, Greenway Club in Falls River still seems to be active with food trucks.  Lately, I saw Sarge’s and Sweet Traditions mentioned there.  While pool season is on the tail end, perhaps its not time to turn off the ignition switch on food trucks here.
  • Plantation Point Farmers Market: There is a new farmers market in North Raleigh, located at 6250 Plantation Center Dr (I-540 and Capital Blvd, next to BJ’s/Big Lots/Petco) that is food truck friendly.  The organizers’ goal is to have two trucks, one entree and one dessert, and running the market year-round.
